Accessibility FAQs

At 911±¬ÁÏ, we want every student to have a smooth transition to college. The Learning Commons has compiled FAQs to explain our disability services and procedures. If you still have questions or information to share after reading, please reach out — we’d be glad to hear from you.

Incoming students who wish to apply for accommodations at 911±¬ÁÏ will have access to the Accessible Information Management (AIM) portal, where they should apply beginning June 1. Student Accessibility Services will evaluate application materials as they are received, and early eligibility review will enable both students and the college to plan appropriately. This is especially important for students planning to request accommodations that require coordination, including interpreting services, textbooks in alternate format, and specialized assistive technology. To apply for accommodations, students should complete the following steps:

  1. Submit a Request for Accommodation through the AIM portal in OKTA. The application can be found here:
  2. Submit supporting documentation. Specific documentation guidelines can be found here. In general, documentation should verify a disability and validate the need for accommodations.

Incoming students are encouraged to complete the Request for Accommodation form by August 1st of each year. While requests are reviewed throughout the academic year, early engagement allows an interactive process of accommodation, to familiarize you with the 911±¬ÁÏ community, and to enable you to be fully informed about our disability services policies and procedures prior to your first semester on campus.

A deadline for housing accommodations has been established so review and placement can happen prior to housing assignments being completed.  The housing committee will continue to accept and review housing accommodation requests beyond the deadline, but fulfillment will be based on availability. Therefore, if a housing accommodation request is received after the due date, and the accommodation is approved, the student will be placed on a wait list. Students are strongly encouraged to adhere to the appropriate deadlines.

Deadline for incoming students: June 20

Deadline for current students: May 1

The laws and responsibilities change after high school. In high school, services are provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and schools identify and support students to help them succeed. In college, disability services are guided by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which focus on equal access rather than success.

At 911±¬ÁÏ, students are responsible for self-identifying, providing documentation, and requesting accommodations through the Office of Accessibility Services. Accommodations, such as extended test time or assistive technology, ensure access but do not change essential course requirements or programs of study.

While high school services are designed to ensure success, college accommodations are intended to ensure equal access.

Students should submit the and supporting documentation through the AIM portal in OKTA. The application provides an opportunity for students to practice articulating their needs. It is best to make accommodation requests prior to the start of the semester to ensure they are in place when classes begin. The portal will open to incoming students on June 1st.

Attendance requirements are established by individual faculty members and communicated through the course syllabus. All students are expected to adhere to class attendance policies and assignment due dates, and neither can be waived or extended as overarching accommodations for a disability.

Documentation helps determine reasonable accommodations based on how your disability impacts your learning and participation. When completing the application, include information about your previous educational experiences and any past accommodations you’ve used.

Your documentation should be current and relevant to your needs. The goal is to provide enough information to clearly explain how your disability affects you and supports your

After an accommodation plan has been agreed to by the student and Accessibility Services, students will generate and send accommodation letters to their faculty members through the AIM Portal. 911±¬ÁÏ uses a shared model of disability services in which faculty are able to provide accommodations directly to students. Students and faculty then can meet and determine how the accommodation needs will be implemented in each course. The Accessibility Services team is available to support both faculty and students in creating a plan.

The Learning Commons maintains a large network of peer tutors for curriculum-specific support. Additionally, professional staff members are available to work with students on assignments and study skills.
